Conservation Success Stories:

Through the Scott Neotropic Fund, Lincoln Park Zoo has given more than a million dollars to conservation researchers in Latin America and the Caribbean. This Fund was established in 1986 with the generous support of Peg and John Scott.

Lion tamarins live in the eastern rain forests of Brazil. As trees are cut down, these small monkeys have become endangered and some are almost extinct! Through the Scott Neotropic Fund, Lincoln Park Zoo has supported field studies on lion tamarins including such topics as community-based environmental education, translocation of isolated groups of Golden Lion Tamarins, and seasonal variation in behavior and ecology.

Their former habitat has been extremely cultivated and turned into plantations since the early colonization of Brazil. Unlike other marmosets, these animals will not invade cultivated land.

Below are maps showing the range of the Golden-headed Lion Tamarin.
